Katarina Witt started to ice skate at the age five. Her talents soon became evident, and she gained entry into a school specifically designed that caters to children who have a passion for sports in Karl-Marx-Stadt. Here she first saw their teacher Jutta M ller. Witt made her breakthrough year in 1982, when she finished second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. Her grace and elegance captured everybody's eye at that time, and from then forward she began to dominate the competition. Olympic triumphs at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt came through a closely fought contest to win the women's figure skating gold medal. It was her victory from four years prior that was a bit more tense. The free skating contest, however she earned the gold medal based on her performance in the mandatory figures as well as the short program. Witt was the only woman ever since Sonja Haenie to be an apex figure skater. Hall of Fame Witt, who had achieved success in film as an actor, returned for figure skating, competed at the Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. She placed seventh but enchanted the crowd even though she didn't win a medal. Witt received her induction to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
